What is a force?
A push or a pull (ex. a kick, hit, punch)
What is air resistance?
An unseen force that pushes on an object on an object in an opposite direction than the object is moving (ex. airplane flying)
What is a net force?
Forces that result in a change in velocity (speed and direction) of the object (ex. end of a tug of war)
What is a balanced force?
Forces that are equal in size but opposite in direction (ex beginning of a tug of war)
What is gravity?
An unseen force that pulls objects towards the center of the Earth
What two factors does gravity depend on?
The distance between two objects and the mass of the objects
What is weight?
The measure of the force of gravity, equipment - scale, unit - pounds/newtons, location matters
What is mass?
The amount of matter in an object, equipment - TBB, unit - g or kg, location does not matter
What is friction?
An unseen force that opposes motion (slows it down)
What does increasing friction do?
decreases motion (grip tape on skateboard, rubber soles on sneakers, chains on tires)
What does decreasing friction do?
increases motion (waxing the floor, chalk on a pool stick, zamboni on ice, butter/oil in a pan)
What is inertia?
The property of matter to resist any change in velocity.
What does inertia depend on?
The more mass an object has, the more inertia it has (ex kicking a ping pong ball compared to kicking a bowling ball)
