Health psychology
Focuses on psychology's role in promoting health and reducing illness
Subjective feeling produced by events that are percieved to be threatening
Two type of stress
Short lived/perceived as a challenge
Server or prolonged
The immune system
Stress does not make us sick, but it does make us less able to resist infection
Stressful life events
Catastrophes, significant life changes, daily hassles
Increase risk of heart disease
stress, high fat diets, not exercising, smoking, anger
Problem focused coping
Focusing on the underlying cause of the stress
Emotion-focus coping
Focusing on your emotional reaction to stress
Factors that effect health
Perceived control, optimism, emotional expression, social support, humor
