permanent magnet
A magnet that retains its magnetic properties in the without the need of an electric current or induced magnetism from another magnet.
induced magnetism
Exists only as long as a metal is influenced by a magnetic field.
iron
As a general rule, magnets only stick to metals that are or contain iron. Steel contains iron. Iron does not contain steel.
magnetic poles
Each of the two points on a magnet from which the magnetic force originates. These are historically named "north" and "south" because the Earth itself has a magnetic field.
magnetic force
The push or pull between magnets.
magnetic field
A field that extends from the north pole and meets (converges) at the south pole of a magnet.
attract
A force that pulls two or more objects together.
repel
A force that pushes two or more objects away from one another.
predict
To presume (guess) something will happen as a consequence (result) of something else.
infer
To guess using something you already know (schema) AND direct observation, but not just one or the other.
hypothesis
A guess (conjecture) made from direct observations and used to guide further investigations.
detect
To discover the existence of.
magnetite
A magnetic mineral that contains iron.
lodestone
A naturally occurring magnet.
interacts
To act upon one another.
