4 Major Functions of the Cooling System
Removes excess heat from the engine.
Maintains a constant engine temperature.
Increases temperature of a cold engine quickly.
Warms the passenger compartment.
2 Types of Cooling Systems
Advantages of Liquid Cooling
Circulates coolant to remove excess engine heat.
More control of engine temperature.
Less temperature radiation.
Pros of Air Cooling
Uses large fins to remove heat.
A mixture of ethylene glycol and water 50/50
Hot coolant flows from the cylinder head to the radiator
Once cooled, the coolant flows back to the engine.
Cooled coolant enters the head and hot coolant exits the block.
Used on high performance engines.
This keeps the hot exhaust valves cooler.
Basic Cooling Parts
Forces coolant through the block.
Can be run by belt, gear, or electrical.
Coolant goes in hot and comes out cooled.
Coolant enters the side of the tank and flows horizontally to get cooled.
Hot coolant enters the top tank, and flows down to get cooled.
Carries coolant between the radiator and the water jackets.
Small diameter hoses that carry coolant to the heater core.
Small Radiator like device used to heat.
Pulls air through the radiator to help cool it down.
Can be run by a belt or electric motor.
Senses engine temperature and controls coolant flows through the radiator
Has several functions:
Prevents winter freeze up
Prevents rust and corrosion
Lubricates water pump
Cools the engine
Pressurizes the system to raise the boiling point.
Relieves excess pressure to protect the system from damage.
Seals the top of the radiator.
In a closed system, it allows coolant flow between the radiator and the coolant reservoir.
For every pound of pressure; the boiling point goes up 3 degrees.
Normal Pressure is at 12-16 psi.
