Science Ch. 3

the genetic material found in all living cells that contains the information needed for an organism to grow, maintain itself, and reproduce; deoxyribonucleic acid
the physical structure in a cell that contains the cell's genetic material
Cell Cycle
the normal sequence of growth, maintenance and division in a cell; 2 main phases: interphase and cell division
the period in the cel cycle in which a cell grows, maintains, itself, and prepares for division; cells DNA is copied
the phase in the cell cycle during which the nucleus divides; produces 2 new cels with identical copies of DNA 4 phases: Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, Cytokinesis
division of a parent cell's cytoplasm following mitosis; nuclei form
Asexual Reproduction
the process by which a single organism produces offspring that have the same genetic material
Binary Fission
form of asexual reproduction; genetic material is copied 1 cell divides into 2 independent cells that are each a copy of the original cell; prokaryotes like bacteria reproduce this way
in some organisms, the process by which certain cell produce new tissue growth at the site of a wound or lost limb; also a form of asexual reproduction
4 Phases of Mitosis
1) Prophase- Chromosomes condense
2)Metaphase- Chromosomes line up
3)Anaphase- Chromosomes seperate
4)Cytokinesis- Nuclei form
