Facial VII
Olfactory Nerve I
It is a sensory nerve, (Afferent) & it is responsible for sense of smell & it runs through the Cribriform plate which is part of the Ethmoid bone.
Optic Nerve II
is a sensory nerve (Afferent), it transmits sight from the retina to the brain, it enters through the optic canal.
Optic Chiasma
point of crossing of fibers from opposite sides, anterior & superior to the hypophyseal fossa. This is located on the bridge or the middle of the Optic Nerve
Optic Tract
this extends from the Optic Chiasma to the Thalamus, it is for visual awareness, it is the two pointy things on the Optic Nerve.
Oculomotor III
motor nerve, (Efferent) it exits through the Superior Orbital Fissure. It is responsible for movement of the eyeball, it also supplies 4 of the 6 extrinsic muscles of the eye & the levator palpabral superioris (which raises the eyelid). It adjusts the shape of the lens for near sighted vision. The 3 skinny little wires that are connected together
Trochlear IV
Motor nerve, (Efferent) it exits the Superior Orbital Fissure. it supplies a single muscle which moves the eyeball Part of the 3 skinny little wires
Trigeminal V
The largest of the cranial nerves, it is the single most important nerve in DENTISTRY, it has a mixed function, both Afferent & Efferent. Afferent (sensory) is responsible for pain, temp., touch, pressure for most of the skin & membranes of the head. Efferent (motor) takes care of the muscles of MASTICATION
3 Divisions of the Trigeminal Nerve are
Ophthalmic V1, Maxillary V2, Mandibular V3
Ophthlamic V1
Sensory nerve (Afferent) takes care of the eye, eyelids, skin of the forehead, nose, some of the paranasal sinuses, upper part of the face & scalp. It exits through the Superior Orbital Fissure
Maxillary V2
Afferent sensory nerve, it exits through the foramen rotundum, it takes care of sensation to the middle & lower face, Maxillary Teeth, roof of the Mouth & Gingiva
Mandibular V3
Mixed Nerves, it exits through the foramen ovale, the sensory function is for sensation of the lower face, lower lips, Mand. teeth & Gingiva, the motor function is for the muscles of Mastication
Abducens VI
Efferent Motor nereves, it supplies a single muscle which moves the eyeball. It exits the brain through the Superior Orbital Fissure. The nerve runs through the sinuses which is close to the Internal Carotid Artery. This is the First nerve to become infected when we have a sinus infection, it is damaged when you cannot move your eye side to side, laterally. Part of the 3 skinny little wires
Facial VII
Efferent motor and Afferent sensory. It goes through the Internal Auditory Meatus and enters the petrous portion of the Temporal bone where various fibers are given off. When it passes through the Internal Acoustic Meatus it exits through the Styloid Mastoid Foramen. Motor function is for the muscles of facial expression, Sensory function is for the skin below the ear.
Auditory VIII or Vestibulocochlear
Concerned with the equilibrium and hearing. It exits through the Internal Auditory Meatus. Afferent Sensory Nerve function is hearing & balance.
Glossopharyngeal IX
Exits through the Jugular Foramen, it is a mixed nerve, the sensory function takes care of the pharynx, middle ear, sensation for posterior 1/3 of the tongue, taste, & the parotid gland. Efferent Motor takes care of the pharyngeal muscle also the stylopharyngeal muscle, which elevates the pharynx when swallowing & a parasympathetic function with the parotid. It is the GAGGING nerve.
Vagus X
Mixed nerve, it exits the skull at the Jugular Foramen & descends through the neck. It carries the motor & sensory fibers to the Thoracic & Abdominal Viscera, It also supplies the Pharynx & Larynx. Sensory functions take care of the soft palate, pharynx, larynx, thoracic, abduman, thymus, heart, & stomach. Motor functions the skin around the ear & taste, sensation for the epiglottis, it is also the LONGEST of all the Cranial nerves. If damaged will cause loss of speech & difficulty swallowing.
Spinal Accessory XI
Efferent Motor, it exits through the Jugular Foramen
Cranial
takes care of the larynx, pharynx, & the soft palate
Spinal
takes care of the sternocleidomastoid muscle, trapezius, & if damaged you cannot rotate, flex, or extend your head
Hypoglossal XII
Efferent motor, it passes through the Hypoglossal canal & becomes closely associated with the Vagus & Accessory nerves. It innervates the Hyoglossus, styloglossus, geniohyoid, genioglossus, intrinsic & extrinsic muscles of the tongue, if damaged tongue becomes paralyzed.
