To combine one substance completely into another substance.
mixture
A combination of two or more substances that are not chemically combined. A mixture can be separated.
compound
A pure substance consisting of two or more elements that are chemically combined.
solution
A mixture in which one substance is dissolved in another. Solutions are liquid, transparent, and uniform.
pure substance
A substance made out of one kind of material with a unique set of chemical and physical properties. They can be elements or compounds.
hypothesis
A possible explanation for an observation that can be tested by scientific investigations.
evidence
Collected body of data from observations and experiments.
particle
A small piece of matter.
separate
To take apart into smaller pieces.
reasoning
The process of drawing a conclusion on the basis of evidence.
claim
A statement you believe to be true.
solubility
The amount of solute that will dissolve in a solvent at a given temperature and pressure.
variable
A factor that can change in an experiment.
control
In an experiment, the standard that is used for comparison.
soluble
Able to be dissolved.
insoluble
A substance that does not dissolve in a solvent.
solute
A substance that is dissolved in a solvent
solvent
A liquid substance capable of dissolving other substances. The solvent dissolves the solute.
saturated solution
A solution that will not dissolve any more solute at a given temperature or pressure.
transparent
A material that allows light to pass through; can see through it.
uniform
The same all the way through; consistent; homogeneous.
element
A pure substance made of only one kind of atom.
atom
Smallest piece of matter.
molecule
A group of atoms chemically bonded together.
