Confidentiality: Terps hold a position of trust. This is highly valued by consumers & is essential to protect all involved
Share assignment-related info only on a confidential & "as-needed" basis (supervisors, terp teams, etc.)
Manage data & any consumer-specific info in a manner consistent w/maintaining consumer confidentiality
Inform consumer when federal or state mandates require disclosure of confidential info
Professionalism: Terps accept assignments using discretion re:skill, comm mode, setting, & consumer needs
Provide services regardless of race, color, national origin, gender, religion, age, disability, sexual orientation or any other factors
Assess consumer needs & the interpreting situation before & during the assignment & make adjustments as needed.
Render the message faithfully by conveying content and spirit of the message
Request support when needed to fully convey the message or when communication challenges come up (CDI, team, etc)
Refrain from providing counsel, advice, or personal opinions
Judiciously provide info or referral regarding available interpreting or community resources without infringing upon consumers' rights.
Conduct: Terps are expected to present themselves approp in demeanor & appearance to avoid conflicts
Consult w/appropriate persons regarding the terp situation to determine issues such as placement & adaptations necessary to interpret effectively
Decline assignment or withdraw from terp profession when not competent due to physical, mental or emotional factors
Avoid performing dual or conflicting roles in educational or mental health teams or other settings
Comply w/set workplace codes of conduct, notify approp. personnel if there is a conflict w/this CPC & actively seek resolution
Conduct & present themselves in an unobtrusive manner & exercise care in choice of attire
Refrain from the use of mind-altering substances before or during an interpreting assignment
Disclose to parties involved any actual or perceived conflicts or interest
Avoid actual or perceived conflicts of interest that might cause harm or interfere with the effectiveness of interpreting
Refrain from using confidential interpreted info for personal, monetary or professional gain
Refrain from using confidential interpreted info for the benefit of personal or professional affiliations or entities
Respect for Consumers: Honor consumer preferences in terps & terp dynamics; also recognize realities of quals etc.
Consider consumer requests or needs regarding language preferences & render the message faithfully
Approach consumer with a professional demeanor at all times
Obtain the consent of consumers before bringing an intern to an assignment
Facilitate communication access & equality & support the full interaction & independence of consumers
Respect for Colleagues: Collaborate w/colleagues to convey message & know that your behavior w/colleagues reflects on prof
Maintain civility toward colleagues, interns & students
Work w/teams thru consultation B4 assign. RE:logistics, providing prof & courteous assistance when asked & monitoring message when acting as "off terp"
Approach colleagues privately to discuss & resolve breaches of CPCs thru standard conflict resol. File formal complaint after if prob continues
Assist & encourage colleagues by sharing info & serving as mentors when appropriate
Obtain the consent of colleagues before bringing an intern to an assignment
Business Practices: Conduct business in prof way. Terps are entitled to $ based on quals & conducive working conditions
Accurately represent quals, such as cert., edu., & experience & provide docs when requested
Honor professional commitments & terminate assignments only when fair & justifiable grounds exist
Promote conditions that are conducive to effective comm., inform the parties involved if conditions do not exist & seek approp remedies
Inform appropriate parties in a timely manner when delayed or unable to fulfill assignments
Reserve the option to decline or discontinue assignments if working conditions are not safe, healthy, or conducive to interpreting
Refrain from harassment or coercion before, during or after the provision of interpreting
Render pro bono services in a fair & reasonable manner
Charge fair & reasonable fees for terp services & arrange for payment in a professional & judicious manner
Professional Development: Expected to foster & maintain terp competence & the stature of the prof thru continued edu
Increase knowledge & strengthen skills through activities such as: higher edu, workshops/conferences, mentoring, etc.
Keep abreast of laws, policies, rules & regulations that affect the profession
