Terms in this set (22)
Horizontal Plane
Plane tangent to a gravitational equipotential surface
Vertical Plane
Plane perpendicular to a horizontal plane
Horizontal Line
Line formed by intersection of a horizontal plane with another nonhorizontal plane
Vertical Line
Line of intersection of two, nonparallel, vertical planes
Bearing Line
Horizontal line from observer to a specific point (target) of interest
Reference Bearing Line
Horizontal line from observer to a specific reference point
Bearing
Angle between a bearing line and the reference bearing line
Great Circle
Circle formed by intersection of the outer surface of a sphere and a plane passing through the center of the sphere
Longitudinal Great Circle
On Earth, great circles that passes through both rotational poles
Bearing Line Great Circle
A bearing line from an observer to a target point is parallel to the great circle passing through the observer and the target point
Magnetic North Pole
Located where N end of magnetic dipole axis intersects the earth's surface
Magnetic Declination
Angle between longitudinal great circle passing through observer and great circle through observer and magnetic N pole
Attitude
The general term for the orientation of a line or plane in space, usually related to geographic coordinates and the horizontal
Trend
The orientation of a line, measured in a horizontal plane
Plunge
The angle between a line and the horizontal measured in a vertical plane containing the line
Pitch or Rake
The angle between a line and the horizontal measured in a specified plane (not necessarily a vertical plane)
Strike
The trend of a horizontal line on an inclined plane
Dip
The plunge of the line of greatest slope on an inclined plane
Apparent Dip
The plunge of a line on an inclined plane measured in a direction oblique to the strike direction
Thickness
The perpendicular distance between the two parallel planes bounding a tabular body of rock
Depth
The vertical distance from a specified level (commonly the earth's surface) downward to a point, line, or plane
Structure Contour (Strike Line)
A line connecting points of equal elevation on a surface
