Asexual & Sexual Reproduction
Terms in this set (18)
What is asexual reproduction?
When an organism produces one or more new organisms that are genetically identical to the parent.
What are the organisms that produce other organisms called?
The organisms that produce other organisms are called parents
What is the organism called when it is reproduced by the parent?
Organisms that are produced by another organism is called an offspring
When would an offspring look different from the parent after asexual reproduction?
The offspring will be genetically identical to the parent in asexual reproduction unless there is a genetic mutation.
In prokaryotes what does asexual reproduction happen by?
What type of cell division is often used in asexual reproduction?
Mitosis which produces genetically identical to the parent.
What is budding?
When an organism develops tiny buds on its body until it forms into a new full-sized organism identical to the parent.
What are spores?
is a specilaized cell that can survive in harsh conditions for a long time, and can be carried by the wind and develops into a organism like a fungus which are reproduced asexually.
What is Vegetative Reproduction?
When new plants grow from the stem, roots, or leaves. Runners are above groud stems. Tuber are underground stems. Plantlets are tiny plants that grow along the edge of a plant's leaves.
What is sexual reproduction?
When 2 parents contribute a sex cell to the new organism. Half of the genes come from each parent.
What is fertilization?
When an egg cell is joined together by a sperm cell.
what is a male sex cell called?
what is female sex cell called?
Do sex cells have a full or half of a set of genetic materials found in body cells?
half of the genetic material.
During fertilization what new cell is formed?
What process does zygote undergo?
What are the advantages to asexual reproduction?
an organism can reproduce quickly. offspring are identical to the parent. any favorable traits from the parent is passed to the offspring. the parent does not need a partner. is genetically identical to the parent unless there is a genetic mutation.
What are the advantages to sexual reproduction?
2 parents contribute a sex cell a male and female and give half of their genetic material in the offspring. Can increase genetic variation. The increase of genetic variation can help the offspring survive when the environment changes. This reproduction is slower. The offspring is similar to the parents, but is not identical.
