(p2A) Ramsey: Mr. Jordan was just saying... (he mentions Jordan)
Jordan: I was complementing your father on the ingenious challenge you gave to your fellow members of the graduating class
(p2B) Audrey: That's very nice of you, Mr Ramsey. ( pulling the lapel of Jordan's coat) I wish you could persuade this father of mine to share your opinion
Jordan: Now Audrey you know that I...
(p18A) Ramsey: Then why under the sun didn't you come when I sent for you, Bob? is that they way you
Jordan: just a minute, Alec. Perhaps Bob and Audrey have had important matters to discuss.
(p18B) Ramsey: what could be more important than...
Jordan: Weren't you ever young?
(p19A) Bob: Audrey ?
Jordan: Alec, with your permission, I think Audrey and I are going to go for a walk. I'm sure you and Bob will want to talk things over.
(p29A) Ramsey: Bayard, this thing has me totally confused
Jordan: It's perfectly logical to me. Given a premise, Bob has to come to a conclusion.
(p29B) Ramsey: What are you driving at?
Jordan: just this. Bob has simply followed out the implications of his giving his life to Christ and wants to go where he can makes his life count the most
(p29C) Ramsey: I don't share your enthusiasm for foreign missions
Jordan: That's too bad. you are missing a lot.
(p29D) Ramsey: and you're sinking allot of money into colleges in Africa, hospitals in India, and so forth
Jordan: and getting a blessing out of it
(p29E) Ramsey: yeah, right
Believe me, Alec, if you want real satisfaction out of your spending, invest in the Lord's work and you'll get the greatest returns in values that really count, spiritual values!!!
(p29F-30A) Ramsey: Money wasted.
Any enterprise that can turn out a great Japanese Christian leader like Kagawa, for instance, is worth supporting. think of return on one hundred years of service to the Savior's name. how about that for interest.
(p30B)Ramsey: That's right, but it doesn't seem to bother you that your only child might become a missionary? You don't seem to be taking it very hard
Jordan: What bothers me more is that Audrey might make her music career an end to itself and become content with a lesser satisfaction in life. what do you mean by "not take it hard" ? do you think I love my Audrey less than you love Bob
(p30C) Ramsey: Of course I didn't mean that. You and I don't seem to speak the same language. you don't appreciate the success i want for Bob.
Jordan: Alec the world considers both successful men, and by accepted standards, I suppose we are, but if i had even half my life to live over again I'd do just what Bob is doing-giving his life to Christian service
(p30D) Ramsey: But you wouldn't have to go to a foreign land to do that.
Jordan:That is so cliche. We don't need to go to Europe or Asia to sell Natural gas, do we ? There is lots of it here in the USA. But we are spending time and money trying to put in new lines in Turkey, Why is that?
(p30E) Ramsey: That a foolish question. because the world needs new markets for natural gas. And if we don't sell it, someone else will. And it will also help Turkeys economy
Jordan: Natural gas may help Turkey's economy, but nothing will help that country as much as spreading the gospel though Christian missions
(p31A) Ramsey: I'm not worried about Turkey. I'm worried about my son.
Jordan: So am I
(p31B) Ramsey: What do you mean ?
Jordan: I'm afraid he'll accept that offer of the directors
(p31C) Ramsey: Did he tell you he would
Jordan: No, Alec,he did not. I have purposely kept form talking with him about it, and i will not do so unless he asks for my advice
(p31D) Ramsey: Then what makes you think he...
Jordan: It just seems natural. You are dangling a tempting offer before his eyes. I would be very disappointed in Bob if he allowed Audrey's unwillingness to go to Turkey keep him form his goal. After all, he is only human, and, if I may say so, my daughter is a most desirable girl.
(p31E) Ramsey: Whats Audrey's position? Will she go to Turkey
Jordan: Wouldn't you be glad if I told you that Audrey has refused pointblank to go as a missionary ?
(p31F) Ramsey: Naturally I
Jordan: Well I'm not going to give you that satisfaction. You'll just have to wait and see. Alec I'm going to act like an old friend and tell you bluntly that in trying to force Bob to give up missions by giving him a well-paying job, you are being less fair than I hoped you would be.
(p31G-32A) Ramsey: look Bayard, you have no right too
Jordan: Oh yes I have. I happen to be the father of the girl your son wants to marry, and as his possible future father-in-law, I have a double interest in Bob's decision since it involves my daughter too. you must know that i am interested in Audrey happiness
(p32B) Ramsey: that's my point. Bob wants to take her to a heathen land. I want to keep her here, with her friends and family where she can follow her music career. Now which of us is the more concerned about Audrey's happiness ?
Jordan: I'm letting Audrey decide that. She understands what this involves. Now she must do what she feels the Lord is leading her to do.
(p32C) Ramsey: And I'm sure she'll go totally against this crazy notion of Bob's
Jordan: No, not crazy, Alec-unless the Carpenter of Nazareth was crazy. Bob has a vision, the same one Christ taught his disciples
(p32D) Ramsey: Can't you get off that point?
Jordan:You can't escape it. Bob knows that believe Christians owe the world our best and the best we can give them the is gospel
(p32E) Ramsey: I thought you claimed that the church has already had a huge impact abroad?
Jordan: It has or I would not have invested my money in it
(p32F) Ramsey: Then why cant we just let it go at that ?
Jordan: Because we can't just be content with a great past we must look to the future. we have only started the job
(p33A) Ramsey: but what does that have to do with my son ?
Jordan: If that fine young man of yours is willing to give his life for service to Christ, I am willing to give what is more than life to me-my own daughter. And with that, not to hold back the lesser thing-my money
(p33B) Ramsey: then give your daughter, but that doesn't mean I have to give my son
Jordan: Not once have I said that you have to give your son. All I have claimed is that your son has the spiritual right to make his own decision. you have every right to advise him but not to make him deny his spiritual integrity in favor of wealth ,and the insistence that Audrey won't go with him that choice is his. hands off ,Alec
(p33C) Ramsey I-I'm sorry. I guess I got a bit upset.
Jordan: This is the first fight you we have had for many years. lets not have another believe me old friend, I know what you are going though; I have already been though it myself
(p33D) Ramsey: you?
Jordan Don't you think that I want success for Audrey just as much as you want it for Bob? He's your only son, but my motherless Audrey is my only child, and if she should leave me I'd sitting alone in an empty house Then I'll need you friendship more than ever.
(p34A) Ramsey: Eh? Boston? must be the Boston office, Bayard
Jordan: most likely
(p34B) Ramsey: If they want an answer regarding bob I-I-
Jordan: you still haven't decided yet Alec
(p37A) Ahmet: Easy, Bob, easy
Jordan: Keep the brakes on, Alec.
(p38A) Ahmet: does that seem strange to you
Jordan: Dr. Demirici tell us why are you doing this
(P38B) Ramsey: All right, Bob, but I think I can speak for Audrey, she'll never go with you to turkey
Jordan: Alec!
(p39A) Audrey: Daddy Daddy I don't want to lose you!
Jordan: you will always be my little girl
