memo
short for memorandum, is a note, document and/or other communication that may inform an office about information.
letterhead
is a heading at the top of a sheet of letter paper (stationery). That heading usually consists of a name, address, logo, and contact information.
resume
a document that tells prospective employers exactly what you want them to know about you and why you would be a good fit for their open position.
cover letter
introduces you and your resume to potential employers or organizations you seek to join (non-profits, educational institutions, etc). It is the first document an employer sees, so it is often the first impression you will make. Take advantage of this important first impression and prepare the reader for your application, stating why you are writing, why you are a good match for the job and the organization, and when you will contact him or her. return address and date
This can be found at the top of the document. It contains the sender's address and current date. Notice the sender DID NOT include their name and the date is written out, August 10, 2010. Notice it also says to hit enter 4 times after the date. If you were doing it manually you would do this, however you will use a template that has this included.
mailing address
This contains the receiver's name; notice the title Mr. in front of the their name, followed by their address
salutation
also referred to as the opening, this is the greeting. Never include the receiver's first name. You want to show them respect by addressing them by their last name. The salutation is followed by a COLON not a comma, which is a common mistake in block letters.
message
after the salutation is the message. The message should tell the receiver why you are contacting them. The message should be single spaced within the text and double spaced between paragraphs.
closing
at the end of the letter you want to close with Sincerely followed by a comma.
signature
