Windows 8 features
Faster and smaller than previous versions, uses less memory; separate products for 2 architectures (intel/AMD or ARM architecure; new GUI optimized for touch devices, has multitouch; corners and edges; live tiles (start screen contains tiles from which younlaunch apps by tapping finger or clicking mouse; windows store applications; on screen keyboard; keyboard shortcuts.
The ability of a multitouch enabled screen, mouse, or touchpad to interpret multiple simultaneous touch gestures, such as the pinching gesture.

Configuring Windows updates
-open Windows 8 settings bar.
-select the settings charm to open settings bar, click or tap 'change PC settings' t the bottom of the settings bar.
-on PC SETTINGS SCREEN scroll to bottom and select 'update and recovery.'
-if Windows updates finds updates, it will display them in a list. If so, click install button and respond to any dialog boxes for user account control, and agreement, the restart computer.
-select 'choose how updates get installed.' Opens page where you can select how important updates, recommended updates, and updates for other Microsoft products are installed.

-Using a keyboard (open power user menu, WINDOWS KEY + X, then press u twice.
-use a mouse or touch to open the power menu. Use settings charm to open settings bar, then power charm.

Navigating and customizing start screen
Customize tiles from the apps screen (starting with 8.1, an apps button on the bottom left of the start screen opens the apps screen, where you can customize app tiles); change start screen background (in 8.1 the settings bar has a personalize option that opens another bar on the right edge, the personalize bar to change patterns, color, etc. ); change user tile picture (choose a custom picture for user tile, which shows account name and an image.
Moving btwn apps
Screen corners and edges make it easier to switch btw apps. Mouse gestures activate the corner, edges respond to edge gestures, which are touch motions that begin to close the bezel of the screen.

Opened by pressing and holding the alt key while tapping the tab key A visually flat version of flip 3D. Displays a rectangle across the middle of the screen that shows all running apps.

Windows 8 search
In 8.1 the search function also searches the Internet using bing. Open search bar anywhere in Windows 8 by using Windows key + Q. Or by opening the charms bar by swiping from the right.
Windows 8 desktop
From the start screen tap or click the desktop told (or Windows key + D) to open the desktop GUI. Start screen replaces start menu.
Desktop centric option in 8.1
Added options for people who work mostly with desktop apps.
-open desktop at startup if you don't want to start at start screen.
-use the same background on the desktop and the start screen (select show my desktop background on Start to show both desktop and start screen).
-replace start screen with apps view (show apps automatically when I go to start). Also allows 'search everywhere instead of just my apps when I search from the apps view.'
-list desktop app first in apps view. Sort apps by category.
New name for Windows explorer. Same file management tool used in Windows 7. Control button opens a menu of to control file explorer window: restore, move, size, minimize, maximize, close.
Administering user accounts
-options on Your Account pane
-sign in options pane. When you change your password, and create or change a picture password, create or change a PIN, or change the password policy.
-adding users. If you're signed in with an admin acct, you can add other users by selecting 'other accounts' the 'add an account.'

Introduced in Windows 8, runs at the OS level so that it protects against malicious downloads from any source, such as browsers, email, local network,or locally attached drives. It's on by default
