Terms in this set (14)
The period of rotation or revolution of an astronomical body relative to the stars
The period of rotation or revolution of a celestrial body with respect to the sun
The region of a shadow that is totally shaded
The portion of a shadow that is only partially shaded
total eclipse (lunar or solar)
lunar- A lunar eclipse in which the moon completely enters the Earth's dark shadow
solar- A solar eclipse in which the moon completely covers the bright surface of the sun
partial eclipse (lunar or solar)
lunar- A lunar eclipse in which the moon does not completely enter Earth's shadow
solar- A solar eclipse in which the moon does not completely cover the sun
path of totality
The track of the moon's umbral shadow over earth's surface. The sun is totally eclipsed as seen from within this path
diamond ring effect
A momentary phenomenon seen during some total solar eclipse when the ring of the corona and a bright spot of photosphere resemble a large diamond set in a silvery ring
A solar eclipse in which the solar photosphere appears around the edge of the moon in a bright ring, or annulus. The corona, chromosphere, and prominences cannot be seen.
The orbital point of closest approach to earth
The orbital point of greatest distance from earth
An 18year 11(1/3) day period after which the pattern of lunar and solar eclipses repeats
if you looked back at Earth from the moon, what phase would Earth have when the moon was full? New? A first-quarter moon? A waxing crescent?
dark half of Earth or 'New Earth' (like the New Moon) @ Full Moon,
Full Earth @ New Moon,
nearly 'half Earth' @ first-quarter moon (phase angle=90°),
'Gibbous Earth' @ waxing crescent (phase angle=45°).
Mostly the phases (of Earth seen from Moon & of Moon seen from Earth) are complementary.
Why do solar eclipses happen only at new moon? Why not every new moon?
Because the Earth, Sun and Moon have to be in a straight line, then the eclipse can occur and that happens only at the new moon.
because the earth, moon and sun are not in one line on every new moon night and solar eclipse happens only when moon comes in the way of earth and sun but in one line only
