Divine Origin Theory
-Theory of political authority
- addressed, appointed or devoted to God or a god.
-That God deliberately created the State and this specific act of His grace was to save mankind from destruction;
-That God sent his Deputy or Vice-regent to rule over mankind. The ruler was a divinely appointed agent and he was responsible for his actions to God alone whose Deputy the ruler was. All were ordained to submit to his authority and disobedience to his command was a sin for which there was divine punishment.
Social Contract Theory
-Which states that the people agree to establish rulers for certain purposes and have the right to resist or remove rulers who violate those purposes.
-The view that persons' moral and/or political obligations are dependent upon a contract or agreement among them to form the society in which they live.
Majoritarian model of Democracy
-Refers to democracy based upon majority rule of a society's citizens
-Assumes that citizens will: have a high degree of knowledge about politics, participates extensively in political processes, and exhibits "rational" behavior.
-It also assumes that citizens are knowledgeable about government and politics, want to participate in the political process, and make rational decisions in voting for their elected representatives.
Pluralist Model of Democracy
-Government by the people
-When the group should do what the largest group of participants wants, even if fewer than half of those individuals old that view.
-An interpretation of democracy in which government by the people is taken to mean government by people operating through competing interest groups.
-Democracy exists when many organizations operate separately from the government, press their interests on the government, and even challenge the government.
The kinds of places in which we live
-The phenomenon of upper and middle class whites moving out of cities and into the suburbs is known as white flight.
-Began on a large scale after the Second World War, when African Americans began to try to establish homes in America's cities.
-Is a comprehensive federal law that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in any federally funded education program or activity.
-No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving federal financial assistance
-Principal objective of Title IX is to avoid the use of federal money to support sex discrimination in education programs and to provide individual citizens effective protection against those practices.
-Title IX applies, with a few specific exceptions, to all aspects of federally funded education programs or activities.
-In addition to traditional educational institutions such as colleges, universities, and elementary and secondary schools, Title IX also applies to any education or training program operated by a recipient of federal financial assistance.
