A & P of pregnancy (Chapter 6)
Terms in this set (15)
Mucus plug that acts as a barrier against bacterial infection
A purplish-blue color of the cervix and vagina caused by the increased vascularity are both noted at about 8 wks.
softening of the tip of the cervix by the beginning of the 6th wk. the cervix has increase vascularity and increase in size. Probable sign of pregnancy.(hypertrophy /bleeds easily)
Softening of the lower uterine segment that allows it to be easily compressed at 6 to 8 weeks of pregnancy.
Rebounding of the fetus against the examiner's finger on palpation. When the examiner taps the cervix, the fetus floats upward in the amniotic fluid.
A pregnant woman notices a thin creamy white to yellow discharge from her breasts. This fluid is known as ________.
Mucous discharge from the vagina or cervical canal that may be normal or pathological, as in the presence of infection.
Maternal cardiovascular changes with pregnancy
1) Slight cardiac hypertrophy
a) Increases Blood Volume
b) Increases Cardiac Output
2)Heart is shifted up and to the left by uterine displacement
3)More audible splitting of S1 and S2
4) S3 may be heard by 20 weeks
5) HR increase 10-15%, 40% for twin gestation
Why do hemorrhoids occur in pregnancy?
Increased iliac venous pressure due to compression from enlarged uterus/baby. This also can lead to edema in the lower extremities.
Contraindicated b/c it cuts off venous return to the heart and lowers blood pressure considerably. Lateral recumbent (Sims) position much safer.
Coagulation time ________ during pregnancy.
Rationale: Increase production of several clotting factors
Respiratory changes in pregnancy
1) Increased Demand for O2
a) Increased metabolism of mother
b) Increased tissue- uterus & breast are larger
c) O2 demand of baby
3)Abdominal Breathing replaced by Thoracic/Costal breathing
a) Diaphram is no longer able to expand d/t
2) Estrogen levels Increase
a) Cause ligaments in the rib cage to relax->
Greater chest expansion
i)Costal angle flares out
ii) Transverse diameter increases
b) Angiogenesis in the upper respiratory tract
i) leads to sinus stiffness, epitaxis
(nosebleed), changes in voice, and a
marked inflammatory response
Calculation of Mean Arterial Pressure
Blood Pressure: 106/70
Formula: [Systolic + 2(Diastolic)] /3
Acid Base Balance in Pregnancy
State of Respiratory Alkalosis d/t tachypnea. Creates a gas concentration gradient between mother and child. Mother has a higher concentration of O2 and a lower concentration of CO2. Therefore O2 naturally travels twd baby and CO2 moves away from baby to mom. In addition, baby's blood has a greater affinity to O2 d/t high hemoglobin concentration in fetal blood.
Calculating estimated date of birth: 1st day of the last menstrual cycle - 3 mos + 7 days
