Action Verb
A verb that shows action
Adjective
A word the modifies a noun of a pronoun.
Adverb
A word that modifies a verb,adjective, or another adverb. Many adverbs end in LY
Preposition
A word the shows the relationship between a noun or a pronoun and another word in a sentence
Antecedent
The word or group of words that a pronoun refers to.
Direct Object
A noun or pronoun that answers the question whom? or what? AFTER an action verb
Indirect Object
A noun or pronoun that answers the questions : to whom? or to of for what ? AFTER an action verb
Predicate Nominative
Is a noun or a pronoun that follows a linking verb and identifies, renames, or explains the subject. To find the PN you must find the linking verb first.
Predictive Adjective
Is an adjective that follows a linking verb and modifies the subject. In order to find the PA you must first find the subject and the linking verb
Clause
A group of words that has a subject and a verb
Independent Clause
Can stand alone as a sentence because it expresses a complete thought
Subordinate Clause
Can NOT stand alone because it does not express a complete thought
Simple Sentence
A sentence that consists of one independent clause
Compound Sentence
A sentence that consists of two or more independent clause
Complex Sentence
A sentence that consists of one independent clause and one or more subordinate clauses
Predicate
Tells what the sentence is or does
Subject-Verb Agreement
A verb must agree with its subject in number
