9 Characterisitcs of life
made of cells, adapt to changes, develop, uses energy, moves, reproduces
metabolism
all the chemical reactions within an organism
synthesis
to build or make something
Homeostasis
An organism's regulation of its internal environment to maintain conditions suitable for survival.
Growth
increase in size
Control GROUP:
The group with the normal or natural conditions. You already know the results in this group.
Experimental Group
*THE TEST GROUP*. It has all the same conditions of the control group except for the 1 thing you test.
Theory
an explanation of a natural phenomenon that is supported by scientific evidence. A hypothesis that has withstood repeated testing over a period of time.
Law
facts about nature that are known to be true.
hypothesis
An explanation for a question or a problem that can formally be tested. An educated guess.
observation
using as many senses to gather information about a particular situation. EX: Women is kneeling.
inference
made from observations and data collected. Inferences will be used to form a conclusion. EX: Women is using electricity.
biotic
living factors in the environment
abiotic
non-living factors in the environment
biosphere
Highest level of biological organization made up of all the ecosystems on earth.
3 levels of biosphere
Land
Atmosphere
Water
ecosystem
Consist of communities of organism and the abiotic factors that affect them.
producer
trap energy from the sun to make their own food through photosynthesis.
primary consumers
organisms that cannot make their own food, they eat the producers.
Secondary consumers
cannot make their own food.some eat for energy and nutrients.
Decomposer
are organisms that break down the remains of dead or decaying plants and animals and return them to the soil. Decomposers absorb nutrients from organisms.
Mutualism
both species benefit in this (++)
Commensalism
one partner benefits and the other one stays to same. (+0)
Parasitism
Parasites benefit but causes harm to the host (+-)
Endangered
very low animals left in species. Could become extinct.
Extinct
no more animals left in the species
matter is composed of
particles of atoms
solid
low energy, slow speed, packed tight
Liquid
medium energy, medium speed, looser packed
Gas
most energy, fast speed, packed very loose.
Element
cannot be broken down
Compound
composed of two or more separate elements; a mixture.
melting
solid - liquid
vaporization
liquid - gas
condensation
gas - liquid
freezing
liquid - solid
sublimation
solid - gas
Organic Compound
has carbon, hydrogn and oxygen
Cell theory
all living things are made of cells. cells are the basic unit of sturcture. all cells are produced from other cells.
Vacuole
stores food water and waste
Chloroplast
organelle that contains chlorophyll ONLY IN PLANT CELL
cell wall
protects the plant cell ONLY IN PLANT CELLS
Cytoplasm
where all the cells activities take place
Nucleus
controls all the cells activities
Cell membrane
protects the cell, controls what goes in and out of cell,
diffusion
Movement of a fluid from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration.
osmosis
transport of water
Sedimentary Rocks
where most fossils are found
mutation
changes in an organisms DNA adaptations are result of
Adaptation
any variation that makes an organism better suited to its environment
evolution
series of changes that occur within an entire species over a period of time
Lamarck's Theory
keeping traits that parents developed during their lives. REJECTED! EX: mom dies hair blue baby will have blue hair.
Darwins Theory
humans choose organisms with the best traits and breed them to get offspring with best traits from both.
4 Parts of Darwins theory
1.organisms producing more offspring than can survive
2.variations are found amoung individuals of a species
3.some variations enable members of population to survive and reproduce better than others
4. overtime offspring of individuals with helpful variations make up more and more pop.
Fungi
Get nutrients by eating dead or decaying animals
