HDI of 0.94. 90% of the population use English practice Christianity. Once the leading manufacturer of steel, automobiles etc. Now leading provider of services, entertainment, media and sports as well as food exporter.
HDI of 0.93. Diversity of languages and religious practices have caused all sorts of conflicts. Has become more unified since WWII. To maintain development, it must import food, energy and minerals.
HDI 0.80. The only regions where the HDI has declined significantly since the UN created the index in 1990. This is because of communist rule. 5 year plans created by Gosplan included heavy industry, dispersing production facilities and locating facilities near raw material deposits rather than markets
What went wrong when Europeans dismantled the economic structure inherited from the communists
1. Scarce funds were used to meet annual production not long term improvements
2. Farming practices were ineffective so they had to import most food
3. Orders sent from national government offices hundreds of kilometers away were ignored in the factories
4. Some targets were impossible to achieve/others ignored. "Why work hard when your job is guaranteed and your supervisor cannot fire you?"
5. Factories polluted the air and water. citizens were unable to pressure their gov. into investing in pollution control devices
By focusing on basic industry, Communists...
neglected consumer products like cars, clothing, refrigerators etc

HDI: 0.87. Although it has a relatively high HDI its much less central to the global economy because of its small number of inhabitants and location. Australia and New Zealand are similar culturally because they were both colonies of UK. Economies are tied UK, Japan and other Asian countries.
Regions of less development:
Latin America, East Asia, Middle East, Southeast Asia and South Asia
HDI: 0.80. Most pop. speak Spanish or Portuguese and practice Catholicism. Resulted because Brazil was once a colony of Portugal. In general development is hindered by inequitable income distribution.
HDI 0.76: China accounts for 1/3 of the total world economic growth and GDP per capita has risen faster there than in any other country. Was the worlds wealthiest country until passed by Europe in the 16th c. Worlds largest producer of coal, steel and cement.
HDI: 0.68. Most products have to be imported (lots of desert). Main challenge is to promote development without abandoning the traditional cultural values. Restrict women's rights. Also suffers from internal cultural disputes
HDI: 0.58. Tropical climate limits intensive cultivation of most grains. Soil is poor because of heat and humidity. Economic development is limited because of mountain ranges, volcanoes typhoons and tsunamis. Philippines, Singapore, Thailand have become major manufacturers of textiles
HDI: 0.58. India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka etc. Pop. is very high and natural increase is among the highest in the world. As a result of the Green Revolution miracle rice and wheat seeds were widely diffused throughout SA.
HDI 0.51.Countries north of the Sahara Desert share economic and cultural traits with the Middle East. Pop. is less than in any other LDC, has a surplus of minerals. Landlocked states have problems shipping materials. Dramatic imbalance between number of inhabitants and the capacity of the land to feed the pop.
