asteroid
A small, rocke object orbiting the sun. Thousands of asteroids exist in an area called the asteroid beld, between Mars and Jupiter.
astronomer
a person who studies all the things in the universe beyond Earth
comet
A small, icy object that orbits the Sun. The centre, or nucleus, of a comet is a ballof ice and dust. A tail of gas and dust spreads away from the comet when it approaches the Sun, making it visible to the naked eye.
crater
A bowl-shaped hollow on teh surface of a planet, moon or asteroid. Many craters are caused by the impact of a meteorite or an asteroid.
gravity
A pulling force that acts between all objects in the universe. The Moon is attracted to the Earth by gravity.
lunar
Something that relates to the Moon. For example, lunar rock.
meteroid
Dust or a small chunk of rock which orbits the Sun. A meteroid that travels through Earth's atmosphere becomes a meteor. A meteor that hits the Earth's surface is called a meteorite.
Moon
the ball of rock which orbits the Earth; Earth's only natural satellite.
orbit
The path of one object as it revolves around another object.
revolve
To move around an object. For example, the Earth revolves in a near circle around the Sun.
rotate
To spin around a centre point. For example, the Earth rotates on its axis.
satellite
A small object in space that orbits something larger. Human-made satelits are launched into space to study the Earth and other planets.
solar
Something that relates to the Sun. For example, a solar eclipse.
solar system
The Sun and all the objects that orbit it.
star
A large ball of gas that gives off light and heat because of nuclear reations deep inside it.
Sun
The only star in the solar system
telescope
An instrument that collects light and other forms of energy from distant objects
universe
The work used to describe all of space and everything in it, including the stars, the solar systemn and other galaxies
galaxy
a cluster of stars, dust and gases held together by gravity
