What is Culture?
language, beliefs, values, norms, behaviors, and material objects passed from one generation to another
What is Material Culture?
physical items that distinguish a culture
What is Nonmaterial culture?
group's way of thinking (beliefs, values, assumptions about the world) and doing (common patterns of behavior, language, gestures)
What are Values?
standards by which people define what is desirable or undesirable in life.
What are Folkways?
norms that are strictly enforced
(not a specific rule or law, no true punishment)
What are Mores?
Core values: must be conformed to
What are Taboos?
A norm so important that it often brings revulsion if violated.
What are sanctions? Positive or Negative?
the reaction to following or breaking norms
Positive: feeling good about yourself, praise, awards, promotion
Negative: prison, booing, negative looks, sneering
What is a subculture?
a world within the dominant culture
ex: sports, religion, hobbies
What is a counterculture?
groups with norms and values at odds with the dominant culture
ex: gangs, cults, KKK
What is ideal vs. real culture?
ideal: perfect, what we would like it to be
(how we are socialized)
real: reality, what it is really like
What is Ethnocentrism?
practice of judging another culture by the standards of one's own culture
What is Cultural Relativism?
making a deliberate effort to appreciate another group's way of life in its own context without prejudice
