What are causes of udder edema in cows?
1. interferes with venous drainage (due to high oncotic pressure from fetus in the pelvic cavity and the large increase in blood supply to the udder outstrips venous return)
2. high sodium/potassium intake
3. hereditary
What is the treatment for udder edema in cows? When would you treat it? How might you prevent it?
Tx:
-diuretics/corticosteroids
-Naquazone bolus (diuretic with corticosteroid)
***treatment isn't usually necessary as it usually resolves on its own
When:
-AFTER calving (*corticosteroids can induce parturition)
Prevention:
-Induce (heifers) to reduce severity
-diet and exercise to control sodium and potassium

Medial suspensory ligament divides udder into two halves and attaches udder to pelvic floor.
