What are the Core Concepts?
Data is arrived by four analyses:
-structural analysis - the individual's personality is analyzed
-TA, is concerned with what people do and say to each other
- Script analysis, deals with the specific life dramas people compulsively
-Game analysis, ulterior transactions leading to a payoff are analyzed.

What is the structural analysis of personality?
There are three ego states: Parent, Adult and Child. These are phenomena rather than actual realities.
What is the parent?
This personality contains instructions, attitudes, and behaviors based on information given from parents, and authority figures.
-wants to be in control, right, acts with superiority and authority
-also is giving love, nurturance, and respect to the child
-may give clear guidelines or mixed messages
What are the two different attitudes of the parent?
Nurturing parent-helping behavior, offering support, affirmation, and caring but can be overprotective
Critical parent-provides standards, control, and punishment, disapproves and criticizes
What is the adult?
-operates logically and unemotionally,
-provides information by reality testing and computer-like approach to life
-values logic over emotion, processes information, solves problems, and integrates messages from the other ego states
What is the counselor role when working with the adult?
-keep conversation adult-to-adult
-the adult will try to make it a parent-to-child where the counselor makes it to a parent
What is the child?
The child is necessary because it contributes to joy, creativity, intuition, pleasure, and enjoyment.
What are the two parts of the child?
-adaptive child which emerges as a result of demands from significant authority figures and is marked by passivity
-natural or free child represents the impulsive, untrained, self-loving, pleasure-seeking part of the child
What is a well-adjusted person?

What is the definition of transaction?
-the basic units of behavior
-unit of human communication or as a stimuls-response connections between two people's ego states
What the three categories of transactions?
complementary transactions-natural communication, which occurs when a response comes from the ego sate to which it was addressed. Lead to interactions positive interactions where communication is clear. Disagreements are apparent and could be worked through.
crossed transactions break communication. This is when a response comes from the ego not addressed. The target ego state and replying state are not the same.
Covert, or ulterior, transactions-involves more than one ego state of each person and are dishonest.
What are ulterior transactions?
The overt communication does not match the covert communication so neither person knows what is in mind of the other person. If continued, it leads to relationship problems.
What is script analysis?
A person's ongoing program for a life; it dictates where people are going with their lives and the paths that will lead there.
What is a life script?

-a corresponding personality development
-confirming childhood decision about oneself and life
-a penchant for either success or failure
- a pattern for behavior

The belief is that all people use ulterior transactions and play games.
What is the definition of game?
An ongoing series of complementary, ulterior transactions progressing to a well-defined, predictable outcome.
What are strokes?
the motivator for games, which turns an honest transaction into a game.
Ego-state switches within the intrapsychic structure.
