Elements of Poetry

Alliteration
repetition of the same consonant sound at the beginnings of the several words
Exaggeration
stretching the truth through a comparison, idiom, or word play
Figurative Language
a combination of elements used to create a feeling or special effect. Includes alliteration, metaphor, simile, personification, and onomatopoeia. Its a way of saying something other the literal meaning of the words.
Idiom
a phrase of everyday words that don't exactly mean what they say. Ordinary expression understood by a group of people using them "word play"
Imagery
language which appeals to the 5 senses: hearing, sight, smell, taste, and, touch
Lyric Poem
short poem written to express the poet's thoughts and feelings in a musical way
Metaphor
a direct comparison between two different things. Does not use these words "like" or "as"
Mood
feeling created by the poet through the use of words, phrases, repetition, rhyme, exaggeration.
Narrative Poem
a poem that tells a story.
Onomatopoeia
words used to create "noise"
Personification
giving an animal, object, or idea human qualities. Such as: dancing, talking, laughing, writing, singing, understanding, answering, smiling etc......
Repetition
repeating words, sounds, phrases
Rhyme
repetition of the ending, the beginning or the middle of a phrase/sentence sounds.
Simile
comparison between two different things using the words "like" and "as"
Stanza
a group of lines in a poem
