Behavior
The way an organism reacts to changes in its environment
Response
A single specific reaction to a change
Stimulus
Something in the environment to which an animal reacts
Innate behavior
Inborn; a behavior that is present and complete without the need for experience
Learned behavior
A behavior that is acquired as result of experience
Reflex
Simple, innate, involuntary response by a part of the body to a particular stimulus
Instinct
A complex innate behavior
Fixed action pattern
The mechanism for instinctive behavior. Triggered by an object or event called a sign stimulus
Habituation
Process by which an animal learns to ignore a particular stimulus
Imprinting
The quick early learning of a behavior that later becomes a permanent response to a stimulus
Classical conditioning
An animals reflexes are trained to respond to a stimulus
Operant conditioning
Trial and error learning the environment rewards or punishes behaviors that an animal performs randomly.
Circadian rhythm
A rhythm that repeats approximately every 24 hours
Reasoning
Insight. Chimps stacking boxes to reach bananas hanging from the ceiling
Altruism
When an animal sacrifices it's life for the opportunity to mate in order to help another member of its species
