A carillon is both a keyboard and a percussion musical instrument. It consists of an arrangement of twenty-three to seventy-seven bells of various sizes ranging from a few pounds to several tons. The bells are positioned so they do not move.
Castanets are percussion instruments that can be made of shells or hard wood
devices that make noise. Two spoon-shaped castanets are tied together with a string. A dancer can place the castanets in each hand, hitting them together to add rhythm to the music of the dance. Castanets used in an orchestra are tied together at the end of a wooden paddle.
a keyboard musical instrument that is similar to a piano. The musician presses the key, which activates a small hammer. The hammer strikes against metal plates that are usually made of steel. The plates are located over hollow wooden boxes that help to resonate or increase the volume of the sound. The celesta sounds like a glockenspiel. Frenchman Auguste Mustel created the celesta in 1886.
a metal blade that strikes a string producing the sound on this instrument.
The clavichord was popular in the 1400s during the Baroque period and was eventually replaced by the piano in the 1700s.
Chimes are sometimes referred to as tubular bells. This percussion instrument usually has eighteen to twenty bells that are attached to a frame. The instrument is usually made of brass and covers about 1.5 octaves (an octave is eight notes).
Claves is an instrument consisting of two wooden sticks or dowels. The musician holds a stick in each hand and strikes one against the other to create a rhythmic beat. Claves produce the rhythm of most Afro-Latin music.
Cowbells were used in many countries to keep track of animals that roamed freely about the countryside. The pitch of the bell identified the owner of the cows. Percussionists use a metal cowbell that does not have a clapper. The outside of the bell is struck with a stick. The tone produced depends on the size of the bells. The bells can be either stationary or handheld.
A cymbal is a large circular-shaped brass instrument. The musician holds a cymbal in each hand and produces a sound by striking the cymbals together. Cymbals can also be played when the musician holds one cymbal suspended by a cord or piece of leather and strikes it with a mallet or stick. Cymbals can also be part of a drum set that is played when the drummer presses on a foot pedal. Cymbals are different sizes and thickness, so no two sets of cymbals sound alike.
The drum is considered to be the oldest of all musical instruments. All drums have some sort of frame such as a cylinder or kettle with a membrane stretched or placed over one end. The material of the membrane can be leather, plastic, or even steel.
Examples of drums include the bass, timpani (kettle), and snare. Drums are used in a wide range of musical genres. Drums are an important part of orchestras, marching bands, and concert bands.
The dulcimer is another instrument in which strings are struck to produce sounds. The dulcimer can have as many as seventy strings. Sound is produced when the musician uses hammers to strike the strings. The musician can also pluck or strum the strings of the dulcimer.
The dulcimer was popular in Europe, Asia, and North America as early as the 1400s. European immigrants brought the dulcimer to America.
The glockenspiel is similar to a xylophone. It consists of metal bars of different thicknesses arranged in two rows that are attached to a frame. A musician strikes the metal bars with two hard plastic mallets, which produces the sound.
There are two types of glockenspiels
The bell-lyra is used mainly in drum and bugle corps and in marching bands. The orchestra bells model is used in orchestras, concert bands, and by ensembles playing chamber music.
The gong is a percussion instrument that is attached to some sort of frame. The gong is made of metal, comes in various sizes, and has a circular shape. A gong may or may not be tuned to a particular pitch. The instrument is played when a rubber mallet covered with some type of material is used to strike the gong. Gongs are used in the production of many types of music.
A kettle drum is also called a timpani. The outside of the drum can be made of fiberglass or copper and has a rounded bottom that is shaped like a kettle. These drums come in a variety of sizes and can actually play different tones or notes when the musician presses a pedal. The kettle drum is played with specially designed mallets. Kettle drums are an important part of an orchestra.
This percussion instrument consists of a rattle shaped like a gourd. The musician holds one end of the maraca and shakes the instrument rhythmically. The maraca is filled with various materials including pebbles, seeds, or even pieces of lead. A musician usually plays two maracas.
The marimba is one of the largest percussion instruments. Some marimbas are so large that several musicians can play one at the same time. A marimba consists of a series of wooden or plastic bars organized on the frame in a similar fashion as the keys on a piano. The musician plays the instrument by striking the bars with mallets.
The marimba is similar in appearance and has a lower tone than the xylophone. The marimba is an old instrument dating as far back as prehistoric times.
There are two types of this percussion instrument, which sounds like a cast bronze bell. One style consists of tubular chimes, which vary in length and diameter that are hung on a frame. The chimes are struck with a heavy mallet covered with leather.
The other style of orchestra bells can be found on a glockenspiel, which was described earlier
A rattle is one of the oldest known instruments, dating back to prehistoric times. This instrument consists of a container that is filled with some sort of loose material. The rattle makes a sound when the instrument is shaken. The maracas and tambourine are examples of types of rattles.
This percussion instrument is a member of the membranophone family of musical instruments. It has strings made out of metal wire, plastic, or gut that are stretched across the bottom of the drum.
The top of the drum
A steel drum consists of a piece of steel placed over the end of a metal 55-gallon barrel drum. The steel drum can be set to specific pitches. The origin of this instrument can be traced to the West Indies and the country of Trinidad.
The tambourine is a circular hoop made of metal or wood. Circular metal disks are attached to the outside of the hoop. This instrument is held in one hand and is played either by shaking or striking it with the other hand, or by striking it against the leg
The triangle is a percussion instrument with a simple design. It consists of a steel bar that is bent into the shape of a triangle. The musician holds the triangle in one hand while striking it with a steel bar. The triangle may also be suspended from some type of frame.
The vibraphone consists of a series of metal bars that are organized on a frame in a similar fashion as the keys on a piano. The bars are struck with mallets. Hollow tubes known as resonators are located under each bar. Each tube has an electric valve that is operated by an electric motor. This valve creates a vibration sound called a vibrato.
The xylophone has a series of rosewood or plastic bars organized on the frame in a similar fashion as the keys on a piano. A hollow tube called a resonator is located below each bar. The purpose of these resonator tubes is to amplify the sound of the xylophone. Instruments similar to the xylophone have been used since prehistoric times.
