Thin and solid outermost layer of the earth above the mantla
The layer of rock between the earths crust and core
The central part of the earth below the mantle made up of the densest materials
The solid outer layer of the earth that consist of the crust and the rigid upper part of the mantle
Soft layer of the mantle ok which the tectonic plates move
The strong lower part of the mantle between the asthenosphere and outer core
Tectonic plates
A block of lithosphere that consist of the crust and the rigid outermost part of mantle
Seismic waves
Waves of energy that travel through the earth away from an earthquake in all directions
Machines that measure the times t which seismic waves arrive at places
Continental drift
The hypothesis that states that the continents once formed a single landmass broke up into the continents we have today
Sea floor spreading
The process by which new oceanic lithosphere forms as magma rises toward the surface and solidifies
Mid ocean ridges
Where sea floor spreading takes place
Plate tectonics
The theory that explains how large pieces of the earths outermost layer called tectonic plates move and change shape
Convergent boundary
The boundary formed by the collision of the lithosphere plates
Divergent boundary
The boundary between two tectonic plates that are moving away from eachother
Transform boundary
The boundary between tectonic plates that are sliding past each other horizontally
Stress that occurs when forces act to squeeze an object
Stress that occurs when forces act to stretch an object
The bending if rock layers due to stress
downward, trough like rocks
Upward arching folds
A break in a body of rock along which one block slides relative to another
Fault blocked mountains
Form when the tension causes large blocks of the earths crust to drop down relative to other blocks
Folded mountains
Form when rock layers are squeezed together and pushed upward
Volcanic mountains
Mountains formed as a result and volcanoes and most located at convergent boundaries
Ring of fire
Tectonically active rim around the pacific ocean
The rising of regions of the earths crust to higher elaborations
The sinking of regions of ten earths crust to lower elevations
