Antigen
A foreign molecule/protein of the virus, that elicits an immune response
Antibody
A protein that attaches to and attacks a particular antigen
T-cell
Cells that mature in the thymus and carry out cell mediated immunity
B-cell
Cells that mature in the bone marrow and carry out humoral immunity
Cell-mediated immunity
T-cells attack bacteria and viruses that have already entered body cells
Humoral immunity
Antibodies secreted by B-cells carry out humoral immunity, mainly against bacteria and viruses in body fluids
Lymphatic system
Consists of lymph vessels, lymph nodes, and other organs such as the thymus
Circulatory system
Consists of heart, blood vessels, and blood
Passive immunity
The body does not secrete its own antibodies but rather borrows antibodies temporarily
Active immunity
Occurs when the body is stimulated by antigens and secretes antibodies in his own defense
Blood capillary
Narrow tube within walls- open at both ends
Lymphatic capillary
Narrow tube within walls-open on one end only
Specific defenses
Immune system - targets specific Invaders
Nonspecific defenses
The skin, digestive juices, antimicrobial proteins -act against any threat
Pathogen
Any disease-causing microorganism which causes an infectious disease
Infectious disease
Any type of illness caused by the presence of microorganisms or viruses that enter the host and reproduce
Temperate phage
Some disease-causing viruses that remain dormant within a cell for many generations before lysing the cell
Latent
Inactive, but having the potential to be active at a later time
Viroid
Smallest known disease causing agent, consisting of a single strand of RNA
Virion
New complete virus particle formed by viral nucleic acid and protein during a viruses reproductive cycle
Transduction
The process by which viruses can change the genetic code of an invaded cell
Vaccine
A solution of a weakend viruses used to induce the production of antibodies
Epidemiologist
A person who studies the origin and distribution of disease
