There was disorder because the Roman Empire had collapsed. After the collapse, there were a number of tribes that set up small warring kingdoms. Some kingdoms may have been briefly united. Charlemagne brought unity and stability to the area when he established his empire. He was a Frank which was a warring kingdom that he took over. When Charlemagne died, the church was the only unifying force left in Europe. The Vikings and the Magyars and other groups started attacking Europe. There was no strong ruler to help fight against these groups. Local nobles organized a system of mutual help and protection called feudalism. Feudalism helped restore order to Europe after Charlemagne died.

When the Roman Empire collapsed Christianity had not spread much out of its borders. Many Europeans were pagans. The church began to establish monasteries and convents and sent out missionaries to convert the pagans. Over time, the Christian calendar, with its many holy days, came to govern daily life. The church became the center of society as well as a place of worship. Monasteries and convents became important places for health care and educational services. The church itself was very wealthy and controlled large areas of land. The church also controlled the Sacraments. People were taught that to avoid Hell they had to do good and receive the Sacraments.
