Carbohydrate
Provides energy, found in grains and sugars. Healthy sources include wheat breads, fruits and veggies. Should make up 40% of diets.
Protein
Builds muscle, bones, and hormones, promotes growth, and is found in most meats, nuts, beans, and eggs
Unsaturated Fat
I provide energy, keep people warm, and provide a layer of protection. Sources of me include olive oil, avocado, peanut butter, and fish.
Saturated Fat
Unhealthy nutrient, should be eaten in small amounts. Associated with clogged arteries and high cholesterol.
Mineral
A nutrient that comes from the earth. Helps with bone and tooth strength and hormone balance.
Vitamin
Keeps people healthy and prevents disease, not made by the body. You must get from food or a daily supplement
Calorie
A unit of heat that measures the amount of energy in food. You take these in by eating and your body uses them during the day for energy.
Obesity
A diet related illness that can lead to heart disease and diabetes, often from eating too many high fat, high calorie, high sugar foods
Water
A nutrient that makes up blood, helps with digestion, regulates body temperature, and removes waste
Fiber
A healthy complex carbohydrate, reduces heart disease and helps with digestion and constipation
Grains
Largest food group, lots of carbohydrates fit here. Whole grains are the healthiest form.
Dairy
A food group filled with calcium and other vitamins and minerals. Skim milk and yogurt are healthy forms.
