Freud - 'The Dream Stage'
Terms in this set (12)
What is the difference between 'latent' and 'manifest' dream content?
latent = 'dream-thoughts' and manifest = 'dream-content'. From the latent we can decipher the meaning of the dream, can understand them as soon as we recognise them. Dream-content has to be transposed into the language of dream-thoughts. Need to look at their symbolic relation.
How can be break down the manifest content of the dream? (1)
Condensation - thoughts concealed behind the dream, condensed into the dream we have. Impossible to fully interpret the dream, may have other meanings, can never determine the amount of condensation.
How can be break down the manifest content of the dream? (2)
Displacement - Thoughts that appear remote from the 'kernel' of the dream, they constitute a connection between the dream-content and the dream-thoughts.
How is it decided what factors will be in a dream?
Elements do not enter a dream and arise from dream-material unassisted. Transference and displacement occurs, meaning that there is difference between the text of the dream-content and the dream-thoughts.
This is known as...
dream displacement - dream-content doesn't resemble the core of the dream-thoughts and the dream gives no more than a distortion of the dream-wish existing in the unconscious
What must elements of dream-thoughts escape to make their way into the dream?
Censorship imposed by resistance.
What happens to the mass of dream-thoughts under the pressure of dream-work?
each dream-thought stands in logical relation to one another in an intricate structure, a mix of thoughts and memories. the dream-work puts pressure on this and destroys the logical relations between these thoughts (Inabililty of dreams to express the 'ifs' and 'buts' and 'ands' of dream-thoughts)
What restores the connections that the dream-work has destroyed?
The interpretative process
But some people think that the dream-content represents logical relations...
however, this is part of the material of dream-thoughts and not a representation of intellectual work performed during the dream itself, not the mutual relations between them
How can the dream-work indicate the relations in the dream-thoughts that are so hard to represent?
dreams take into account the way that connection exists between all portions of the dream-thoughts by combining the whole material into a single situation or event
How is the alternative 'either-or' expressed in dreams?
Cannot be expressed - both inserted as equally valid. Usually used to describe dream-element that has a quality of vagueness. To interpret, treat the two apparent alternatives with equal validity and link them together with an 'and.' Two main lines of thought converged in the manifest content of the dream.
What is simply discarded by dreams?
Categories of contraries and contradictions. No way of deciding whether positive or negative, they are presented as one thing.
