binary number system
a number system that uses only two values, 0 and 1. and is used by computers and digital devices to represent and process numeric data.
A module or chip consisting of multiple electronic components and used to store and process bits and bytes in todays computers.
ALU (Arithmetic logic unit), Control unit, Registers
Also called the system board, the main circuit board of the computer where many of the hardware components are placed such as the central processing unit, memory, storage, and other supportive chips.
The specific set of instructions that a processor is engineered to carry out.
Temporary or volatile memory that stores bytes of data and program instructions and addressed cells for the processor to access.
The system bus connects the CPU to the chip set and through it to the RAM and other components on the motherboard
A trend first predicted by intel co founder Gordon Moore in 1965 that technological innovations would be capable of doubling the transistor density's in an integrated circuit every two years resulting in increased processor speeds.
Set of programs that coordinates the activities of the hardware and various computer programs
Consists of programs written to preform tasks or solve problems for people, groups and orginizations.
The primary tool of software engineers provides comands for writting software that are translated to the detailed step by step instructions executed by the processor to achieve an objective or solve a problem
A software system that automates tasks by controlling communication between computers over the internet
Application Programming Interface (API)
A set of prgramming tools provided to access an operating system or online service in order to create software based on that operating system or online service
Exclusive rights legally granted to the owner
Defines the premissions, rights and restrictions provided to the person who purchases a copy of the software
Open source software
Software that is destributed typically for free with the source code so that it can be studied changed and improved

A marketing method for distributing software that allows costumers to use software free of charge for a limited time
Software updates that are designed to correct them each month
Runs system checks and then transfers the operating system from the hard drive to RAM
Command based user interface
Requires that text commands be typed at a prompt in order to perform basic tasks
Graphical User Interface (GUI)
Makes use of a keyboard and mouse to manipulate graphics images on the display to issue commands to the computer system
Associated software that must be installed in order for the operating system to recognize and communicate with a device
