Physical features on Earth's surface.
weathering
The process of breaking rock into sediment.
erosion
The process of moving sediment from one place to another.
deposition
The process of dropping, or depositing, sediment in a new location.
crust
The thin, rocky, outer layer of the earth.
mantle
The layer of rock beneath the Earth's crust.
core
The center and hottest layer of the Earth. The outer core is liquid iron and the inner core is solid iron.
plate
Rigid block of crust and upper mantle rock.
magma
Molten rock from Earth's mantle.
volcano
A mountain formed by lava and ash.
earthquake
A shaking of the ground caused by the sudden release of energy in the Earth's crust.
faults
Places where pieces of the crust move.
continental drift
The theory of how Earth's continents move over its surface.
fossil
The remains or traces of past life found in some rocks.
mineral
A naturally occurring solid that has a regular arrangement of particles in it.
igneous rock
a rock that forms from the cooling of molten rock
sedimentary rock
Rock formed from compressed or cemented deposits of sediment
metamorphic rock
A rock that has changed by heat and pressure deep within the earth
