Absorbents
Bismuth subsalicylate (Pepto Bismol, Kaopectate)
Uses: Anti-diarrheal
*Salicylate - use with caution in children/adolescents RT risk of Reye's Syndrome
*Adverse effects: temporary darkening of the tongue/stool, constipation, and all effects of aspirin
Anticholinergics (Belladonna Alkaloids)
Atropine, Hyoscine
Uses: Anti-diarrheal. Often prescribed in a combination form. Donnatal is the most common combination form.
*Serious adverse effects: urinary retention, tachycardia, blurred vision, increased pressure in the eye, photophobia, confusion, anxiety
Opioids
Diphenoxylate with Atropine (Lomotil)
Loperamide (Imodium)
Uses: Anti-diarrheal
*Contraindicated in patients with ulcerative colitis, pseudomembranous colitis, bloody diarrhea, and severe glaucoma
*May produce morphine-like subjective effects: drowsiness, dizziness, respiratory depression
*Imodium is available OTC, does not affect the CNS
