NCEA Level 1 Science 1.1 Mechanics Flashcard set describing distance-time graphs.
Terms in this set (11)
What can be plotted on a distance-time graph?
The distance an object has moved at different times
What variable is on the y (vertical) axis?
Distance
What variable is on the x (horizontal) axis?
Time
What does the size of the slope (gradient) determine?
Speed
What determines the direction of a moving object?
The sign of the slope (+ or -)
What determines the velocity of an object?
Speed plus direction, e.g. 50 km h⁻¹ East
What does a constant (straight) slope mean?
The object is moving at a constant speed
How is the speed of an object determined?
(x₂ - x₁) ÷ (y₂ - y₁) → rise ÷ run
What does a flat horizontal line mean?
The object has stopped (distance does not change over time)
What does a negative gradient (downward-pointing slope) mean?
The object is returning to the start
When will a non-linear graph (line is not straight) be observed?
When an object is accelerating (speed is increasing) or decelerating (speed is decreasing)
