Vocabulary list of the structures and other terms related to the circulatory system.

Heart
Muscular pump that makes a force when it contracts that pushes blood.
Atria
Ear-like; thin- walled chamber that COLLECTS blood
Ventricle
Thick-walled chamber that PUMPS blood
Valves
Flap-like structures which prevent backflow
Blood Vessels
tubes that serve as a pathway for blood to flow
Arteries
thicker walled vessels with higher pressure that carries blood AWAY from the heart (mostly oxygenated)
Veins
thinner walled vessels that has valves and lower pressure that carries blood BACK to the heart (mostly De-oxygenated)
Capillaries
one celled vessel where nutrients and waste are exchanged to/from cells and blood
Blood
Fluid which transport materials throughout body.
Red Blood Cells
disk-like shape and has no nucleus that carries oxygen
White Blood Cells
larger cell with nucleus that fights infections
Platelets
cell fragments that promote blood clotting and prevent bleeding
Plasma
Liquid part of the blood that consists of water and dissolved substances
