Quorum Sensing
form of gene expression which is regulated in response to cell density. Used as form of communication between cells through autoinducers. Commonly found in biofilms.
Signal Peptides
molecules used for quorum sensing in Gram-positive bacteria
AHLs
molecules used for quorum sensing in Gram-negative bacteria
Autoinducer
a molecule which is produced by cells in a biofilm. When the signal molecule reaches appropriately high concentrations in a cell, it triggers the transcription of specific genes
Biofilm
consists of microbial colonies which are encased in an adhesive, usually made of a polysaccharide and attached to surfaces
Persistor phenotype
a state in which specialized cells are produced within a biofilm. These cells are not actively growing or dividing cells, they are not susceptible to antibiotics and are specialized survivor cells
