absolute Value
the absolute value of a number is its distance in units from 0 on a number line
alternate exterior angles
angles outside the parallel lines, but on opposite sides of the transversal. In parallel lines, alternate exterior angles are congruent.
alternate interior angles
angles inside the parallel lines, but on opposite sides of the transversal. In parallel lines, these angles are congruent.
angle
the joining of two rays with a common endpoint called a vertex.
association
the degree to which two variables are related in the terms of direction
base
the larger in a power, it is the factor used repeatedly in the multiplication problem
bivariate data
a data that has two variables
clustering
where data points bunch up together
complementary angles
two angles whose sum is 90 degrees
congruent
having the same shape and the same size
conjecture
a theory or opinion without proof
consecutive terms
items following directly after each other in a sequence
constant difference
when the difference between consecutive terms in a sequence is exactly the same
continuous data
a set of data with no breaks in its data points, its graph has no holes or gaps
corresponding angles
angles in the same position in regards to the set of lines and in regards to the transversal. In parallel lines, corresponding angles are congruent
cube root
a number used three times in a multiplication problem that results in the radicand
cubing a number
taking a number to the third power
dilation
a transformation that changes the size but not the shape of an object
discrete data
a set of data with a finite number of data values, discrete data graphs as individual points on a number line or on the coordinate plane
equation
a mathematical sentence with an equal sign
evaluate
to find value of an expression for specific value. Substitute the specific value in for the value and simplify
exponent
the smaller number in a power, it is counting number and tells how many times the base is used as a factor
exponential form
numbers or expressions written as powers with a base and an exponent
expression
a mathematical phrase using numbers or variables or both. Expressions may contain operation signs
exterior angle
the outer angle formed when one side of a triangle is extended. The exterior angle is on the same side of the extended line as the triangle
function
a special relation such that for each input there is one and only one output
hypotenuse
the longest side of a right triangle, it is across from the right angle. It is identified where the letter side c.
Index
The outer superscripted number of a radical that indicates how many times to use the number in a multiplication to a problem so as to result in a radicand.
Interior angles of the triangle
The three angles inside the triangle.
Inverse operation
an operation that undoes another
irrational numbers
a number that cannot be written as a ratio
leg of a right triangle
one of the sides of the right triangle that forms the right angle.
linear
a set of points that when graphed on the coordinate plane from a straight line, never bending ,never turning.
linear equation
an equation whose variable or variables are all raised to the first power and the only first power.
Outliers
any points that is substantially different from the other points.
Multiplication Inverse
one of a pair of numbers whose product is one.
Perfect Square
the result of a number being multiplied by itself.
Power
A mathematical expression with two parts, a base and an exponent.
Radical
the root symbol
Radicand
the number under the radical
Rational Numbers
Any number that can be written as a ratio of two integers a/b, where the divisor, b, is not zero
Ray
a part of a line with one end point, extending forever in one direction
Reciprocal
the multiplicative inverse of another number
Reflection
a transformation that flips all the points of a figure across a line. The line is called the line of symmetry
Remote interior angles
the two interior angles that are cross the way from a specified exterior angle
repeating decimal
decimals having one or more digits following the decimal point that repeats endlessly
Rigid transformation
the change of a figures position
Rotation
A transformation that turns a figure about a fixed point. The point is called the center of rotation
scientific notation
A number written as a product of a factor,a, and a power of ten using an exponent in the form.
sequence
An ordered list of numbers or figures.
similar polygons
polygons in which the corresponding sides are all in the same proportion, and the corresponding angles are congruent.
slope
the ratio of the vertical change to the horizontal change of a line or delta y over delta x. It is identified with the letter m.
solution
the point or points the lines in a system have in common.
square root
Another number that when multiplied by itself gives the original number
standard form
A number written with digits and commas and periods where appropriate
supplementary angles
Two sides whose sum is 180 degrees
system of linear equations
A set of linear equations for which a solution is sought
terminating decimals
A decimals that has a limited number of digits following the decimal point
translation
A transformation that moves all points in a figure the same distance and the same direction
transversal
A line that cuts through a set of lines
trend line
A line drawn in a scatter plot that best represents the general of the data
vertical angles
when two lines interest, four angles are formed. The angles across from each other are vertical angles. Each angle in a pair of vertical angles has the same angle measurement. Vertical angles are congruent.
y intercept
the point where a line crosses the y-axis. It is identified with the letter b and is the y-value for the point.
