Hydrologic
having to do with continuous movement of water on, above, or below the surface of the Earth. Water can change states from liquid, vapor, and ice
Evaporation
to change from a liquid state to vapor as by heating
Condensation
to change from a gaseous/vapor state into liquid droplets. Reduction in temperature causes increased density
Precipitation
: rain, sleet, snow, hail or other forms of water falling from the sky as a product of condensation. Usually associated with weather fronts.
Water Vapor
: the gas phase of water continuously generated by evaporation and removed by condensation
Transpiration
: a 2nd way that water enters the atmosphere as water vapor. It leaves plants through pores (holes "stomata") in the leaves, stems, etc. {similar to sweating of plants}
Percolation/Infiltration
to pass/seep/trickle through a porous substance (such as certain rock types) for filtration
Aquifer
a layer of porous ("permeable") rock, sand or gravel that holds water
Surface Runoff
the flow of water, or from wet rain, snowmelt, or other sources, over land back to sea level
Groundwater
water found in the ground that supplies wells and springs
Wind
the movement of air (gasses) from an area of high pressure (equivalent to saying high density) to an area of low pressure (less dense).
Convection
the movement of heat energy within a fluid (a gas or a liquid). It is a circular pattern with warm (less dense, lighter, low pressure) moving upward, and colder/more dense moving downward
