Terms in this set (25)
Science of classifying and naming
Evoluntionary ancestry among organisms
Two part name system; groups genus
Keys based on successive choices between teo alternatives
King phil calls other family games super stupid
Kingdom of living organisms
After eating pizza frank provides alchol.
Why were mostly women and children affected by Kuru disease?
Women and children ate the internal oragns. And men ate the muscles
states that allele and genotype frequencies in a population will remain constant from generation to generation in the absence of other evolutionary influences.
description of your actual physical characteristics.
Makeup of cells
Stock of gene in interbreeding population
How was the population adjusted to 50 beads?
The 10 extra beads represent new individuals in the population
What water quality parameters were tested?
The Do levels, temperatures, pH, Po and TDS
Why is it essential to monitor surface water quality?
Lower DO will cause organisms to die. Higher phosphorus will cause less nutrients. The temperature determines if the water is suitable for living organisms.
Why are nutrients such as nitrates and phosphorus a concern to water surfaces?
Too much nitrate too much algae and too much phosphates causes less nutrients
What is sewage treatment and why is it necessary?
Sewage treatment is the process of removing contaminants from wastewater. It's necessary because it keeps pollutants out of streams.
Why is agricultural runoff harmful to lakes?
Unknown nutrients and unknown amounts. Which can cause an algae bloom depleting dissolved oxygen
What is dissolved oxygen saturation
Is calculated as the percentage of dissolved oxygen at that time of day. Nomograph use the DO and TEMP to find the meeting point.
Aquatic systems are limited in which two nutrients? What are the natural sources of these two nutrients to aquatic ecosystems
Phosphorus and nitrates. They come from air, water , soil and rocks
Difference between phytoplankton and zooplankton
Phytoplankton are floating producers. Ex. Green algae
Zooplankton are the primary consumer of phytoplankton. ex. Bosmina
Why is cultural eutrophication bad for an aquatic system?
Over time sewage and fertilizers cause an increased amount of nutrients which causes high looms of phytoplankton the lake community is suffocated.
How does eutrophication amuse low dissolved oxygen conditions in a lake
Hugh bloom means more dead primary producers. Detrivores feed on the phytoplankton which uses a lot of oxygen
What was the relation between phosphorus lvls and DO? What happens when DO goes below 4mg/L?
As phosphorus lvls increased DO decreased. When DO drops below 4 the trout dies.
When the phytoplankton population rapidly expanded, what happened to the zooplankton and fish population?
Zooplankton and fish die causing the water to become toxic
Why does the diversity of a lake change when it becomes eutrophic?
Because there are more primary producers and consumers.
