Why are water molecules polar?
A water molecule is polar because there is an uneven distribution of electrons between the oxygen and hydrogen atoms.
What are acidic solutions?
Acidic solutions contain higher concentrations of H+ ions than pure water and have pH values below 7.
What are basic solutions?
Basic, or alkaline, solutions contain lower concentrations of H+ ions than pure water and have pH values above 7.
Is a water molecule neutral?
Yes
Why is a water molecule polar?
It has an uneven distribution of electrons between the oxygen and hydrogen atoms.
What is Cohesion?
an attraction between molecules of the same substance
What is Adhesion?
An attraction between molecules of different substances.
What is a mixture?
A material composed of two or more elements or compounds that are physically mixed together but not chemically combined
A mixture of two or more substances in which the molecules of the substances are evenly mixed is called a(an)?
solution
What is the greatest solvent in the world?
water
What is a suspension?
A suspension is a mixture in which particles of a material are more or less evenly dispersed throughout a liquid or gas.
Why is water neutral despite the production of hydrogen ions and hydroxide ions?
the number of positive hydrogen ions produced is equal to the negative hydroxide ions produced, so they balance each other out.
What does the pH scale indicate?
the concentration of H+ in a solutions compared to the number of hydroxide; range from 0-14 & indicated the acidity or alkalinity of a solution ions
What does the pH scale indicate?
the concentration of H+ in a solutions compared to the number of hydroxide; range from 0-14 & indicated the acidity or alkalinity of a solution ions
How many more H+ions does a solution with a pH of 4 have than a solution with a
pH of 5?
10 times more
What is a base?
A base in chemistry is a substance that can accept hydrogen ions (protons) generally, donate electron pairs. A soluble base is referred to as an alkali if it contains and releases hydroxide ions (OH−) quantitatively. It will turn litmus paper to blue. It as a pH value of 7-14.
What are buffers?
buffers are chemicals that neutralize the effects of adding small amounts of either an acid or a base to a solution
