ERJ-170/175 Landing Gear and Brakes
Terms in this set (42)
How is the landing gear extended and retracted?
Electrically commanded, hydraulically activated
Which hydraulic system controls the nosewheel steering?
Hydraulic System 2
The nosewheel steering system is ______ controlled, ______ actuated steer-by-wire system.
Electronically, Hydraulically
Can the landing gear aural warning be silenced by pushing the LG WRN INHIB button?
Only if both radio altimeters have failed
When is the LG WRN INHIB switch used?
To inhibit the landing gear warning in the event of a dual radio altimeter failure.
What are the 3 landing gear extension methods?
- Normal - LG lever down releases hydraulic pressure from the uplocks and retraction actuators.
- Electric Override - Bypasses PSEM to directly command the selector valve.
- Alternate Gear Ext. Handle - free fall method, releases hydraulic pressure from uplocks. (Gear handle must be in down position in order to get "3 Green" on EICAS)
When would you use the Alternate gear extension procedure?
If hydraulic pressure is not available for gear operation
When would the Gear Electric Overide switch be used?
Landing gear lever control box failure, bypassing the PSEM (Proximitiy Sensor Electronics Module) and commands gear extension in the same sequence as
normal
PSEM function
Two PSEM monitor 6 WOW proximity sensors (2 on each gear) to determine AIR or GROUND mode.
What is the purpose of the landing gear lever lock?
Prevents inadvertant retraction of landing gear on the ground.
What is the purpose of the DN LOCK REL button beside the landing gear lever?
Mechanically releases landing gear lever lock If gear won't retract on takeoff and terrain imminent.
What keeps the gear locked in position?
Extended: Down-lock springs
Retracted: Mechanical up-lock hooks
When will the aural warning for the landing gear sound?
If the gear is not down and locked
<700ft. RA + LOW TLA
OR
Any altitude with flaps >=5
How is gear position determined?
- 12 UP/DOWN lock sensors (2 UP/2 DOWN) on each gear
- If there is a sensor disagreement on the same gear, the sensor agreeing with gear handle is used.
Describe the landing gear indications:
-Green
-White
-Amber
-Red
Green: Down and locked
White: Up and locked
Amber: In transit
Red: Gear position & lever disagreement (20 sec. grace period)
How do the landing gear doors activate?
Mechanically during landing gear extension or retraction
How are the brakes commanded?
- Brake by wire
- Electrically commanded, Hydraulically activated
- Pedal position transducers send brake requests to the
Brake Control Module (BCM)
What hydraulic systems provide brake pressure?
HYD SYS 1 - Outboard brakes
HYD SYS 2 - Inboard brakes
Both - Parking/Emergency brake
_____ prevents tire skidding and ensures maximum braking efficiency.
Anti-skid protection
What protections are provided for braking?
Touchdown: No braking until 3 secs after ground mode or >50 kts wheel speed
Anti-skid: Compares wheel speeds and releases hyd. pressure (inop <10 kts) Not available for emergency braking (parking brake)
Locked-wheel: BCM monitors IB and OB wheel pairs and reduces hydraulic pressure to the slower wheel if wheel speed is 33% slower than faster wheel. Allows up to 33% differential braking for diff braking purposes (inop<30kts)
What provides emergency braking?
The Parking Brake handle using pressure from the two brake accumulators (no antiskid protection)
How many applications will the parking/emergency brake provide?
6 applications
Is anti-skid braking available using the parking/emergency brake?
No
What stops the wheels from spinning during retraction?
Main gear: BCM applies brakes after weight off wheels
Nose gear: Snubbers in the nose bay stops the wheels
Which hydraulic system controls nosewheel steering?
HYD SYS 2
How is steering through the tiller engaged?
Tiller must be held down.
What are the limits for nose wheel steering with the tiller?
Angle varies with ground speed
Up to 40 knots: +- 76 degrees
41-100 knots: Decreases linearly from 76 to 7 degrees
What are the limits for nose wheel steering with the rudder pedals?
+-7 degrees
What disengages the rudder pedal steering?
The activation of the nosewheel steering.
What is the turn radius for 180 degree turn on the E175?
59' 2"
What determines the minimum turn radius obstruction clearance path for an aircraft with standard winglets?
Horizontal stabilizer tip
Meaning of towing lights?
On nose gear:
Red - Steering on, or parking break on or main brakes on. Do not tow!
Green - Steering off, brakes off. Towing safe.
When will autobrakes deactivate?
- Brake fault
- Toe brakes applied
- Below 60 kts
- TL not idle or reverse
When will nose wheel steering go to free wheel mode?
- Steering system failure
- AIR/GROUND system failure
- Steering angle exceeds 76 deg
- switching it of
How can nose wheel steering be disengaged?
- Switch on AC GPU panel
- Switch behind control wheel
Is it acceptable for the brake wear indicator pins to be flush?
Yes
What indications are needed for a safe pushback?
- Green towing light on nosewheel
- Parking brake ON light extinguished
- STEER OFF EICAS displayed
The Landing and RTO Autobrake Modes will be disarmed if any of the following conditions occur:
The selector knob is set to OFF, pedal braking is applied, BCS (Brake Control System) failure is detected or either thrust lever is advanced beyond idle during autobrake application
What conditions must be met for the autobrakes to engage during a rejected takeoff?
Thrust Levers IDLE or REV, wheelspeed above 60 kt and brake pedals not pressed
For high speed steering on the ground, which steering mode is used?
Rudder pedal steering mode
When do you use hand wheel steering mode?
Low speed control or Sharper turn angle required
What does the red guarded steering switch on the forward ramp panel do?
Disengages nosewheel steering and enables engagement of nosewheel steering
