Density

STUDY
PLAY
matter
is made up of particles
Density
The comparison of the amount of matter in an object to the amount of space in an object.
density formula
Density= Mass/Volume (d=m/v)
Density of water
The Density of Water is 1 g/ml
float
If an object has a Density LESS than 1g/ml, then it will float.
sink
If an object has a Density GREATER than 1 g/ml, then it will sink in water.
graduated cylinder
used to measure Volume in water displacement
L x W x H
The formula to find Volume of a box-like object using a ruler(metric).
mass
amount of Matter in an object. Units are grams.
unit for density of a liquid
g/ml
unit for density of a solid object
g/cm³
volume
- amount of space an object takes up. Units are cm³ for Solids and mL for Liquids.
water displacement method
The method of finding VOLUME of an irregular shaped object using a graduated cylinder.
water displacement steps
1. Put an even amount of water in a graduated cylinder. Record how much water in mL (A).
2. Put the irregular object in the graduated cylinder(B).
3. Subtract the amount the water it rose to(B) and the amount of water you started with(A). B - A= Volume
physical properties
can be observed without changing the substance (Odor, color, volume, physical state, density, melting point, texture, boiling point, specific gravity)
chemical property
describes how matter reacts when it changes chemically into another substances. Ex. reaction with acid, base or with air to rust, flammability, decomposition.
