Terms in this set (20)
What are the organizational levels of the body?
7. Organ system
What is an organelle?
The parts that make up a cell (mitochondria, ribosome...)
What is a tissue?
Two or more types of cells working together
What is an organ?
Two or more types of tissue working together
What is the primary goal of the body?
To maintain homeostasis
What is homeostasis?
The regulation of the body to maintain stable systems
How is homeostasis acquired?
The body responds to stressors by using feedback mechanisms
What is negative feedback?
The body does the opposite of the stressor (Heart rate, blood sugar)
What is positive feedback?
The body increases the stressor (blood clotting, child-birth contractions)
Is positive or negative feedback more common?
What is a feedback mechanism made of?
Receptor (receives info)
control center (decides what to do)
effector (does something/effects a change)
What is energy?
The capacity to do work
What is kinetic energy?
What are 4 types of potential energy?
Radiant energy (light and heat): Vitamin D, cancer
Mechanical energy (movement): body moving
Chemical energy (reactions): food
Electrical energy (electrical signal): nerves
What is a covalent bond?
Shares electrons between elements
What is the difference between a polar and a nonpolar bond?
A nonpolar bond shares the electrons evenly, a polar bond results in the electrons more towards one of the elements
What is an ionic bond?
Takes electrons; atom with a charge
What is a "proton donor"?
An acid (pH < 7)
What is a "proton acceptor"?
A base (pH >7)
What is a buffer system and what does a it do?
Something that can act as an acid or base and regulates pH (ex. in our blood HCO3-)
