7.1 Life is Cellular
The smallest living unit in an organism is a cell.
Terms in this set (15)
It is the fundamental concept of Biology. It states that all living things are made up of cells and new cells are produced from existing cells.
How does a microscope work?
Most microscopes use lenses to magnify the image of an object by focusing light or electrons.
Allows light to pass through a specimen and uses two lenses so that the power of magnification can be varied.
Magnifies the image of the light microscope even further
Disadvantages of light microscope
Most living things appear transparent
What is the importance of staining a specimen?
Staining specimens can make them more visible when viewed under a microscope.
Can be attached to specific molecules and can be made visible using a special fluorescence microscope
Uses beams of electrons that are focused my magnetic fields. Offer a much higher resolution that light microscopes.
Transmission electron microscopes
It is a type of electron microscope. Makes it possible to explore cell structures and large protein molecules. Cells must be cut into ultra thin slices before it can be viewed.
Scanning electron microscopes
A pencil-like beam of electrons is scanned over a surface of a specimen. Do not have to be cut into ultra thin slices. It also produces 3D images of the specimens surface.
Must chemically preserve their samples. Can only be used to examine non-living cells and tissues.
All cells are surrounded by this. Sometimes called plasma membrane because many cells in the body are in direct contact with the fluid portion of the blood, the plasma.
Large membrane enclosed structure that contains genetic material in the form of DNA and controls many of the cell's activities.
Cells are generally simpler and smaller then eukaryotic cells. Do not separate their genetic material within a nucleus.
Generally larger and more complex than prokaryotic cells. In this cell, the nucleus separates the genetic material from the rest of the cell.
