Terms in this set (35)
Bandwidth
The amount of data that can be transferred over a network in a certain amount of time
Bluetooth
Allows electronic devices like cell phones and computers to exchange data over short distances using radio waves
Bus Topology
In a bus topology computers are arranged in the linear format. All devices are connected to a central cable, called the bus or backbone
Client
Any part of the network that receives data such as a workstation
Computer network
Computers connected together for the purpose of sharing information and resources
CPU
The CPU is the brains of the computer where most calculations take place
File Transfer Protocol
A communications method for transferring data between computers on the internet
Firewall
A computer firewall limits the data that can pass through it and protects a networked server or client machine from damage by unauthorized users.
Host
Any part of the network that gives data out(where client accesses the data from) such as a server
Hub
A device that uses its ports to connect devices (computers, printers, etc.) together
LAN
Local Area Network; a geographical network that covers a relatively small geographical area such as a building or a small campus - no more than a mile distance between computers
MAN
Metropolitan Area Network; a geographical network that covers a larger geographical area such as a city or community; may be used to connect computers in libraries, government agencies, etc. together - no more than 30 miles in size
Mesh Topology
Devices are connected with many redundant interconnections between network nodes
Modem
A device that allows computers to communicate over telephone lines
Motherboard
The main circuit board of a microcomputer
Network Interface Card (NIC)
A card installed in a computer that allows you to connect to a network ( can be Ethernet, telephone, or wireless )
Parallel Port
A parallel interface for connecting an external device such as a printer
Peer-to-Peer
A controller network that simply connects computers to each other or to a device such as a printer, but a server is not necessary
Protocol
How data is formatted, transmitted and received in a network
RAM
Main memory. Temporary Memory. Data can be changed or deleted. Information is lost when the computer shuts down
Ring Topology
All devices are connected to one another in the shape of a closed loop, so that each device is connected directly to two other devices, one on either side of it
ROM
ROM (read-only memory) refers to special memory used to store programs that boot the computer and perform diagnostics. Most personal computers have a small amount of ROM. Permanent memory that can't be changed
Router
A device that transfers data from one network to another in an intelligent way
Serial Port
Many newer systems have replaced the serial port with the USB
Server
A computer with large processing resources that stores all of the software that controls the network, as well as the software that can be shared with the computers attached to the network
Sound Card
An expansion board that enables a computer to manipulate and output sounds
Star Topology
All nodes are connected to a central computer
Switch
A computer networking device that connects network segments
USB (universal serial port)
An external bus standard that supports data transfer
Video Card
A board that plugs into a personal computer to give it display capabilities
WAN
Wide Area Network; largest type of network in terms of geographic area;largest WAN is the internet
Wi-Fi
Wireless local area network that uses radio signals to transmit data
Wireless Adapter
The device that you must have on your computer in order to connect to a wireless network
Wireless Local Area Network
WLAN - uses high-frequency radio waves rather than wires to communicate between nodes
Workstation
A personal computer located on a network
