During the latent phase of labor, the first 3 cm's of cervical dilation occur.This phase is the longest and varies in length from nulliparouswomen (7.3-8.6 hrs.) to multiparous women (4.1-5.3 hrs.).
Contractions gradually increase in frequency, duration, and intensity. The laboring woman may appear social and excited.
Nursing assessment should include:
-Frequency of contractions,
-Fetal position, presentation, and station
-Maternal vital signs
-Has spontaneous rupture of membranes occurred?
-Cultural beliefs and values
Significant history should include:
-EDB and fundal height if data as conflicting
Nursing care should include:
-Orient to unit
-Review birth plan
-Review information about labor, breathing, comfort measures
-Notify physician/midwife of status
-Encourage ambulation, position changes, fluids
