What is the WHO definition of Physical Activity?
all movements in everyday life including work, recreation, exercise and sporting activities.
Describe physical activity
May be defined as any bodily movement produced by skeletal muscles that results in energy expenditure (expressed as kilocalories)
Physical Activity can also be classified as structured or incidental.
What is the difference between structured activity and incidental activity
Structured physical activity tends to be planned and has set guidelines, where as incidental is less structured than planned activity.
What is sedentary behaviour?
Sedentary behaviour involves activities requiring little to no movement, for example: sitting, watching TV, homework
Explain Sedentary Behaviour Paramater
Sedentary behaviour is deemed to be the level of physical activity that falls below the level necessary to produce a health effect on the body.
Explain Physical Activity Parameter
The term Physical activity will imply sufficient activity to produce a health benefit for an individual.
A person can be deemed both physically active and sedentary, if their level of activity is sufficient to induce a health benefit then they will be deemed to be physically active.
List five physical benefits of physical activity
Reduced risk of cardiovascular disease
Reduced blood pressure
Reduced risk of type 2 diabetes
Strengthened musculoskeletal system
Healthy weight maintenance
List three physical fitness benefits of physical activity
Cardiovascular improvements 3-4 days week, 20 mins + at 60-75% max HR. Heart and lungs work more efficiently.
Increases in flexibility, coordination, strength and balance.
Skill development PA from an early age develops a wide range of motors skills and allows children to identify activities
List three social benefits of physical activity
Increased social skills Teamwork, leadership and good sport behaviour can be learned from organised sports
in unstructured play children learn sharing, taking turns and friendly interaction
Increased social networks community cohesion, family connectedness.
List three emotional and mental benefits of physical activity
Increased emotional wellbeing improves self esteem, confidence and mood and creates positive attitudes.
Improved mental wellbeing can reduce feelings of stress, anxiety and depression
Improved cognitive function enhanced memory and learning, improved concentration
Explain METABOLIC EQUIVALENTS (METs)
Metabolic equivalents (METs) are used commonly to express the intensity of physical activities.
A MET is the ratio of a person's working metabolic rate relative to the resting metabolic rate
1 MET is equal to 3.5mL/kg/min..
List the METs level that must be reached for an activity to be considered a sedentary behaviour and moderate intensity behaviour
Sedentary behaviours include activities that involve energy expenditure at the level of 1 - 1.5 METs.
Participation in an activity of moderate intensity would result in a MET level of 3-6
Explain Incidental Physical Activity
Incidental physical activity is less structured than planned activity. An example is using the stairs instead of the lift at a shopping centre.
Often the goal is not physical activity-the incidental activity occurs as a consequence of engaging in this behaviour.
List the Domains of Physical Activity
Leisure-time Activity
Household/gardening
Occupational
Active Transport
Describe leisure time as a domain activity
Leisure-time activity is considered activity that is over and above that which occurs within the workplace.
Leisure-time activity is performed during recreation, non-working spare time when a person have the freedom to choose an enjoyable activity or pastime.
