Population
All things and individuals that the researcher is interested.
Sample
A subset of a population.
Variable
A characteristic that differs or varies between members of the sample or population.
Univariate
A single variable is studied.
Bivariate
Two variables are studied. Relationships between variables.
Multivariate
Multiple variables are studied. Relationships between variables.
Inferential
Procedures that allow us to make inferences or conclusions about the characteristics of a larger population on the basis of the sample characteristics.
Coding
Procedure for converting verbal information into numbers/symbols that are more easily analyzed (e.g., facilities data set, NO= 0, YES= 1- look at codebook).
Index Variables
Variables that summarize several other different variables. Combination variables.

Nominal and Ordinal Data
Nominal Data
Names, categories, IN NO ORDER, mutually exclusive (e.g., race, gender, region).
Ordinal Data
Names categories, IN ORDER, mutually exclusive (e.g., rank, weekday, small- medium-large).
OR
Place (e.g., 1st, 2nd, 3rd).
Numerical Data
Ordinal, Interval, and Ratio Data
Interval Data
Ordered, continuous numbers. Arbitrary, meaningless zero, place marker (e.g., air temperature, year).
Ratio
Ordered, continuous numbers. Meaningful zero (e.g., weight, height, quantity).
