Glencoe Science, The Air Around You, Chapter 3
6th Grade Science
Terms in this set (22)
The pattern of weather that occurs in an area over many years.
WHAT DOES CLIMATE DETERMINE?
The types of plants or animals that can survive and it influences how people live.
WHAT FACTORS EFFECT THE CLIMATE OF A REGION?
Latitude, Landforms, location of lakes and oceans, and ocean currents.
Regions Closest to the equator get the MOST solar radiation.
The measure of distance north or south of the equator.
CLIMATE OF THE TROPICS
Regions between latitudes 23.5 degrees North and 23.5 degrees South and receives the most solar energy
CLIMATE OF THE POLAR ZONES
Regions between latitudes 66.5 degrees North and 66.5 degrees South is where solar radiation hits these zones at low angles, spreading energy over a large area.
CLIMATE OF TEMPERATE ZONES
This region is between the Polar Region and the Tropic Region and the temperatures are moderate.
HOW DOES LATITUDE AFFECT THE CLIMATE?
Latitudes Closer to the equator are warmer than Latitudes further away.
HOW DO LARGE BODIES OF WATER AFFECT THE CLIMATE?
By absorbing or giving off heat.
HOW DO OCEAN CURRENTS AFFECT CLIMATE?
1.Warm currents begin near the equator and flow toward higher latitudes, warming the land regions they pass.
2. Winds blowing from the sea are often moister than those blowing from land.
3. Coastal areas have wetter climates than places further inland.
HOW DO MOUNTAINS AFFECT CLIMATE?
The climate is colder in the mountains than at sea level because the air has fewer molecules to absorb the heat.
WINDWARD SIDE OF LARGE MOUNTAIN RANGE
Air rises, cools and drops its moisture. Heavy precipitation is common.
LEEWARD SIDE OF A LARGE MOUNTAIN RANGE
Air descends, heats up and dries the land. Deserts are common.
HOW DO CITIES AFFECT CLIMATE?
Streets, parking lots and building heat the air.
HEAT ISLAND EFFECT
When air pollution traps the heat.
Short periods of climatic change caused by changes in the amount of solar radiation areas received.
Don't have much temperature change, instead they have dry and rainy seasons.
Have warm summers, cold winters and mild springs and falls.
North Pole's summer the sun is up for 6 months, so the sun never rises at the South Pole.
The climate event that involves the Tropical Pacific Ocean and the Atmosphere. (Water is Warmer)
The water is cooler than normal in the Pacific Ocean.
